Indianapolis – It’s so easy to expand the college football playoffs to 16 teams that a 10th grader can do.
In 1998, Harold Shelton, who was a sophomore at Detroit Renaissance High School, put out his own proposal to expand the 16-team games. Shelton, now a researcher at the Big Ten Network, just needs to go back to his parents’ house to prove it.
“My dad was always of the opinion that if you have a suggestion or you have a complaint, you should call someone or write someone instead of just complaining about it,” Shelton told Sporting News.
Chilton went to work. He fired up the dial internet, used the BCS arrangement, drew a 16-team slide, wrote it all down and mailed it to the NCAA.
“It seems to make a lot of sense,” Shelton said. “Basketball came to prominence when it expanded to 64 teams in 1985. It was the biggest event outside of the Super Bowl in American sports.”
Almost a quarter of a century has passed, but the talk of 16 teams is back. ESPN’s Pete Tammel reports that Ohio State’s athletic director, Gene Smith, mentioned the 16-team in-between conversation after the Big Ten ADs meeting this week.
One new wrinkle that surfaced when the Big Ten ADs met this week over the playoff was increased conversation about a 16-team playoff. OSU AD Gene Smith to ESPN: “Sixteen seems to be out there. You can’t ignore him.”

The Big Ten must be a huge fan of a potential 16-team setup. In fact, this preparation should be pushed by the conference. Big Ten football advisor Barry Alvarez was among those who addressed what that might look like in theory at Big Ten Media Days on Wednesday.
“This weekend was the first time I heard of 16 people,” Alvarez said. “I can live with 16. You have to start week 0 and find out. The players want to play.”
College Football Playoff’s contract expires after the 2025 season. On January 7, the 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame sporting director Jack Swarbrick wrapped up three days of meetings without coming up with last summer’s proposal for a 12-team football playoff.
So why not just float 16 teams out there as a demo balloon? The top 10 companies will be in a prime position to get multiple quotes each year. Look at College Football Playoff’s final based rankings and see those 16 teams. The Big Ten will play 31 playoffs, three times more than the SEC’s 28. Under this format, the Big Ten West champion – who has lost their last eight games in the Championship – would be the Big Ten – in CFP.
The numbers may change with Oklahoma and Texas joining the SEC, UCLA and USC coming into the Big Ten, but not by much.

“There are pros and cons to every situation,” said Josh Whitman, Illinois athletics director. “If 16 is correct and it’s a lot or a fixed number of AQs and a lot of big numbers, you have to believe that the Big Ten, as we continue to grow and establish ourselves geographically and traditionally, we will be in a strong position to put a lot of teams into that playoff.”
Pat Kraft, athletic director of New Pennsylvania State, still thinks 12 is the best number to expand.
“I think it will expand,” Kraft said.
Is it of interest to the game – 12 or 16? You have to look at the entire calendar and how that works. Do you play at home in the first two rounds? What do you do to the bowl system? I think it would be 12.
The potential for a 17-game college football season can be hard to sell, so stop playing once a regular season. The bowl system will be more complicated, but these games can still be played. Then there are also schools like Ohio State, which will be in the CFP each year with 16 teams but that won’t necessarily reflect their dominance of the conference. Ohio State coach Ryan Day wasn’t interested in expanding the CFP.
“I don’t know if I can even answer that,” Day said.
It sounds exciting, but there are a lot of things that come with that.

Michigan State coach Mel Tucker will be on the other side of that. The Spartans finished 10-2 in the regular season before advancing to the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl. Will the Spartans be a regular playoff in a 16-team setup.
“I love when more guys have the chance to win a championship,” Tucker said. You only get so many chances to play. Expansion will do that, but what would that look like. who knows? ”
Smith’s comments suggest there are some people familiar with the pressure for a 16-team playoff. It will have more teams than the NFL, which is the best post-season professional product. It will match the Sweet 16 Weekend Men’s Basketball Tournament. It will be the most comprehensive game plan to date, albeit at the expense of the sanctity of the college football season. However, if old school principals like Alvarez are speaking positively about it, there is something in it.
“Every game counts,” Alvarez said. “Now you see people lose interest when a team loses early, ‘Now they’re out of the playoff.'”
I think it keeps the interest longer, and I think it will help college football whether it’s eight, 12 or 16.
If she was indeed 16, Shelton would be among those who feel justified.
“One of my parents said, ‘Send it, keep a copy for yourself,’ so if they ever use your idea, you can claim you got it first,” Shelton said. “That’s what I ended up with.”
It just needs to find the original to show it working.
