Enabling 6G Services, Capabilities & Technologies

The research institute recently released its third 6G white paper, which explores the 6G framework and enabling technologies that experts believe will shape people’s lives after 2030.

Titled “Building a Freely Connected Integrated Physical and Digital World: 6G Enabled Services, Capabilities and Technologies”, the research team from the Communications Research Institute of Vivo have already set their sights on future communications, particularly 6G, the next generation communications protocol.

“As one of the world’s leading smartphone vendors, we are committed to empowering consumers by making high-end 5G smartphones affordable and accessible,” said Chen Fei, President of the Communications Research Institute at Vivo. “At the forefront of research and development, we continue to explore what the 6G world might look like and what technologies we need to develop to get there.”

Over the past two years, the industry has been gradually building a consensus about what services 6G can provide and the key capability indicators that must be achieved. Research and development of related key enabling technologies is also gaining momentum. The Research Institute actively contributes to shaping the future of 6G through in-depth analysis and evaluation of business models, 6G engines, application scenarios, system architecture, and enabling technologies.

This latest white paper on 6G builds on two previous work released in 2020 by the same research institute, including “Digital Life 2030+,” which provides insight into some of the many potential digital scenarios for 6G for the next decade, and “Vision of 6G.” , Requirements and Challenges”, which defines the smartphone maker’s vision for 6G, which is that 6G will enable the convergence of the digital and physical worlds.

The white paper proposes that 6G will provide superior communications, information and converged computing services, becoming the basis for an interconnected and converged physical and digital world. According to the analysis, 6G technology will combine communication, computation and sensing in one system. The integrated 6G network will not only connect humans to humans, but also humans to machines and machines to machines, helping to create a whole new digital world. Hundreds of billions of devices are expected to be connected by 2030.

Rakesh Tamrakar, an expert on the 5G standard in vivo said. “By seamlessly connecting industries, transportation, workplaces, and homes, 6G will make a significant contribution to society — from democratizing professional talent to strengthening emergency and disaster response.”

6G will expand core communications services to support entirely new experiences, such as immersive mixed reality, 3D and multi-sensory communication. 6G mobile data services will continue to improve capacity, data rate, response time, reliability and many other aspects. This will expand the range of customers and increase the value of services, with greater overall flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of individuals and industries.

This means that every performance indicator, such as data rate, including peak data rate, user-experienced data rate, connection delay, and area traffic capacity, will need to be improved several times or more compared to 5G.

Defining 6G service capability requires careful consideration of demand, technology, and cost, and balancing performance metrics with efficiency indicators.

Enabling technologies

New network functions must be introduced to support new 6G services and achieve sensing and connectivity integration. 6G technology will converge the mobile network, computing, the interaction of data across domains, and the native AI network. Therefore, it requires a new system architecture design.

Integrating sensing and communication into a new field of opportunity in cellular wireless networks – Native 6G AI would improve network and air interface efficiency, enhance system flexibility and reduce cost. The introduction of a data plane across layers from end to end is essential to support smart and basic information services. Ultra-low-power connections reduce the barrier to terminal access, allowing for truly ubiquitous connectivity. Currently, the development of multi-input and output, reconfigurable smart surface technology and new waveforms are some of the exciting areas of research, paving the way towards a more efficient and flexible network that can support more application scenarios, and provide more advanced sensing tasks.

Research and development of 6G technology standards is still in the early stage. Vivo Telecom Research Institute is dedicated to improving 6G scenario use cases and technical indicators, conducting in-depth research and empirical validation of potential 6G technologies, and contributing to the development of a globally unified 6G technology standard.
